System Requirements

Basalt Linux runs on a wide range of hardware — from older machines to modern computers.

Minimum Requirements

  • Processor: 64-bit x86_64 (Intel or AMD), 1 GHz or better
  • RAM: 2 GB
  • Storage: 10 GB available disk space
  • Graphics: Any graphics card with display output (VGA, HDMI, DisplayPort, DVI)
  • Display: 1024x768 resolution or higher
  • Media: USB drive (8 GB+) or DVD for installation
  • Network: Internet connection recommended for updates

Recommended Specifications

  • Processor: Dual-core 2 GHz or better
  • RAM: 4 GB or more
  • Storage: 20 GB or more (SSD recommended)
  • Display: 1366x768 resolution or higher

Supported Architectures

  • x86_64 (amd64) — Standard 64-bit Intel and AMD processors. This is the only supported architecture for the current release.

Performance Notes

  • Optimized to run on both older hardware and modern machines
  • Xfce desktop is efficient — expect good performance even with 2 GB of RAM
  • Compositing is disabled by default for better GPU performance
  • An SSD is recommended for best responsiveness
  • A USB 3.0 drive is recommended for faster installation

Known Limitations

  • Secure Boot is not supported — disable it in BIOS/UEFI settings before installing
  • 32-bit (i386) processors are not supported
  • ARM-based processors (Raspberry Pi, Apple Silicon) are not supported
  • Hybrid graphics (NVIDIA Optimus) may require additional configuration
